Heavy load handling: safety, limits and equipments
When we talk about the handling of loads we refer to all the operations of transporting a load that can be manually supported by one or more operators or with the help of specific equipment.
Manual handling of loads has always been the subject of worker protection legislation which also allows connected risk assessment.
load handling risks
The manual handling of loads associated risks refer to:
- the possibility of the onset of pathologies and in particular the musculoskeletal ones attributable to continuous lifting or pushing operations;
- the possibility that the load by falling or due to its own characteristics leads injuries to the operator who carries it.
NORMATIve references
The normative references for risk assessment are the ISO 11228 Technical Standards, “Ergonomics – Manual management” which are divided into three parts:
- Part 1: ‘’Lifting and carrying’’
- Part 2: ‘’Pushing and Pulling’’
- Part 3: ‘’Handling of low loads at High Frequency’’
In particular, part 2 specifies the risks and the limits associated with pushing and towing activities carried out by an adult worker in an upright position, who applies force with both hands to move or stop an object.
It takes in consideration a series of variables that affect the extent of the risk:
- Force applied to the load;
- Posture adopted;
- Frequency, duration and distance traveled;
- Object characteristics;
- Operator individual characteristics;
- Working environment conditions.
AVOID LOADS MANUAL HANDLINGS
The manual handling of loads, which represents a potential danger for workers, must always be avoided all the more if the recommended limits are exceeded. It is necessary to take measures to avoid the manually performing of the activity.
In plants where there are rolls of paper, cardboard, tissue paper, metal wire or tubes, for example, the reels can have a very high weight.
LIMITS OF THE EQUIPMENTs for the loads handling
The equipment used to move them are generally forklifts (or even electric pallet trucks), but these cannot always be used on the entire surface of the plant. In fact, there are areas near the production machines or very narrow spaces that prevent their use.
Operators are therefore often forced to manually move reels that can reach a mass of 5 tons (paper reels) or 50 tons or more (wire and cable reels). In other circumstances, carts are used to transport the reels or loads. But even in this case, the movement of the trolley is often carried out manually, still involving a high degree of risk for the operator.
In the tissue paper production and transformation plants, for example, the use of the bridge crane is also used, but as for the forklift, it cannot reach and cover the entire area of the factory.
SOLUtions to move a load THROUGHOUT the whole plant surface
How to get even where forklifts or bridge cranes do not arrive? Which compact tool allows you to easily move the reels or loads of heavy weights and dimensions?
Renova’s Moviroll roll pusher has been design to cope to these operational needs and complies with the safety regulations provided within the plant.
Moviroll is a compact high-performance tool that thanks to its handy but heavy-duty design allows you to move small or large loads and place them on the shuttle cart without any effort for the operator while eliminating possible injuries caused by manual pushing.
Moviroll is available in the pneumatic and battery driven versions. It can be used close to the production line, to separate two reels, to push or even pull loads.
With Renova’s Moviroll accessories is also possible to stop reels (Stop Wedge), to change flanged reels direction (Reel Turner) or to 360° rotate a paper or corrugated roll (Rotating Plate) by definitively eliminating manual intervention and any risk for operators.
